Vivera™ Retainers with Anterior Bite Ramps
After orthodontic treatment, retainers are essential for keeping the teeth in their corrected positions. For patients who clench or grind, we may recommend customized Invisalign® Vivera retainers with anterior bite ramps at Todorthodontics Smile Studio.

Vivera retainers are clear, custom-made retainers designed to fit closely over the teeth. They are made from a strong, durable material and can be customized with features such as bite ramps.
What Are Anterior Bite Ramps?
Anterior bite ramps are small, carefully designed areas behind the upper front teeth. When the retainer is worn, the lower front teeth gently contact these ramps.
This changes the way the upper and lower teeth meet while you are wearing the retainers. In selected patients, the ramps may help:
- Reduce heavy contact between the back teeth
- Decrease some of the force placed on the teeth during clenching
- Provide additional protection for the teeth and dental restorations
- Support a more comfortable resting position for the jaw
- Maintain the alignment achieved through orthodontic treatment
The ramps do not prevent all clenching or grinding, and they are not a cure for TMD. They are one tool that may help manage the effects of an overactive jaw in appropriately selected patients.
Because bite ramps change how the teeth contact, their design must be customized and regularly monitored by the orthodontist. They are not appropriate for every bite or every type of jaw-joint problem.
A Three-Part Approach to Clenching, Grinding, and TMD Symptoms
For some patients, the most effective plan addresses the teeth, the bite, and the jaw muscles together.
1. Orthodontic Treatment
When orthodontic treatment is otherwise indicated, Invisalign® aligners or braces can level and align the teeth and improve the way the upper and lower teeth fit together.
Correcting tooth position can create a healthier and more stable foundation. However, orthodontic treatment alone cannot guarantee that clenching, grinding, or TMD symptoms will stop.
2. Therapeutic Neuromodulators
Therapeutic neuromodulators can reduce excessive activity in the powerful chewing muscles. This may decrease the intensity of clenching and grinding and relieve muscle-related tightness, fatigue, facial pain, or tension headaches.
You can read more about how this works in Relax Your Jaw. Reduce the Strain.
3. Customized Vivera Retainers with Bite Ramps
After active orthodontic treatment, customized retainers help preserve the corrected tooth positions. For selected patients, anterior bite ramps may also reduce heavy contact between the back teeth and provide added protection from clenching and grinding.
More Than Simply Straightening Teeth
Our goal at Todorthodontics Smile Studio is not only to create a beautiful smile. We also consider how the teeth, bite, jaw joints, and facial muscles function together.
For appropriately selected patients, a comprehensive plan may include:
- Active orthodontic treatment to align the teeth and improve the bite
- Therapeutic neuromodulators to reduce excessive jaw-muscle activity
- Customized Vivera retainers with anterior bite ramps to maintain the result and help manage damaging tooth contact
This combined approach may reduce strain on the teeth and chewing muscles, protect the orthodontic result, and improve overall jaw comfort.
Every patient is different. TMD symptoms may also be related to joint conditions, arthritis, previous injuries, sleep disorders, stress, dental disease, nerve-related pain, or other medical concerns. A thorough evaluation is necessary before recommending treatment.
A Healthier Smile and a More Comfortable Jaw
You do not have to accept constant jaw tension, worn teeth, morning headaches, or facial muscle discomfort as part of everyday life.
Schedule a personalized evaluation to learn which combination of treatments may be appropriate for your individual needs.
