Jaw surgery
with braces
Some misalignments have more to do with your jaws than your teeth. These can be simple to treat in childhood when your jaws are still growing, but for adults the only way to amend your jaws structure is through jaw surgery - which we do in conjunction with orthodontic treatment.

What is jaw surgery?
Jaw surgery, also known as orthognathic surgery, helps to correct irregularities in the jawbones and overall facial symmetry. Getting your jaws aligned properly can not only approve your appearance, but your speech, breathing, digestion, and oral health.
If you are a good candidate for jaw surgery, we will work closely with your surgeon to design an orthodontic treatment plan that coincides with your surgical procedure.
How braces and surgical
orthodontics work together
Once your jaws are realigned, we still need to worry about your teeth! That’s why we always recommend that jaw surgery be performed in conjunction with braces or aligners. If you choose to be treated with braces, we can use either self-ligating braces or clear braces.
We will start your treatment with braces prior to your surgical procedure. While it may seem like your teeth are getting MORE out of alignment at first, we are simply placing them so that your teeth will be aligned after your surgery.
Once you have recovered from your procedure, we will continue your treatment with braces to tweak the alignment of your smile and ensure your teeth are in their optimal positions.
What can jaw
surgery treat?
Jaw surgery with braces is used to address more complex alignment concerns where both the teeth and jaw position need to be corrected together. At Todorthodontics Smile Studio in San Francisco, CA, this combined approach is carefully planned to improve both function and facial balance.
Jaw surgery may be recommended for:
- Bite discrepancies, such as open bite or misalignment that cannot be corrected with braces alone
- Facial asymmetry or imbalance caused by jaw position
- Excessive wear on teeth due to improper bite function
- Jaw positioning concerns, including a receding or protruding jaw
- Breathing-related issues, including chronic mouth breathing or sleep apnea symptoms
- TMJ-related discomfort and strain on the jaw joints
- Difficulties with chewing, swallowing, or speech
- Recovery from facial trauma or injury affecting jaw alignment
