Relax Your Jaw. Reduce the Strain

Do you wake up with a tired or sore jaw? Do you frequently clench your teeth during the day or grind them while sleeping? Overworked jaw muscles may be contributing to your discomfort.

Therapeutic neuromodulators, commonly known by brand names such as Botox®, can help relax overactive chewing muscles and reduce the excessive force caused by clenching and grinding.

Understanding Clenching and Grinding

Teeth grinding and clenching, also called bruxism, can happen during the day, while you sleep, or both. Many people are not even aware that they are doing it.

Over time, frequent clenching or grinding may contribute to:

  • Tight, tired, or painful jaw muscles
  • Morning headaches or discomfort around the temples
  • Jaw joint pain or tenderness
  • Difficulty opening the mouth comfortably
  • Worn, chipped, cracked, or sensitive teeth
  • Damage to fillings, crowns, veneers, or other dental work
  • Enlarged or bulky jaw muscles

These symptoms may be associated with temporomandibular disorders, commonly called TMD, which affect the jaw joints, chewing muscles, and surrounding structures.

How Does the Treatment Work?

A therapeutic neuromodulator is carefully injected into selected chewing muscles, most commonly the masseter muscles along the sides of the jaw and, when appropriate, the temporalis muscles near the temples.

The medication temporarily reduces excessive muscle activity. It does not "freeze" the jaw or prevent normal movement. The goal is to decrease the intensity of clenching and grinding while allowing you to continue speaking, smiling, and chewing normally.

Potential Benefits

Depending on your individual condition, treatment may help:

  • Reduce jaw tightness, soreness, and muscle fatigue
  • Decrease the strength and intensity of clenching and grinding
  • Relieve muscle-related facial pain and tension headaches
  • Reduce stress placed on the teeth, dental restorations, and jaw joints
  • Improve comfort when resting or moving the jaw
  • Soften the appearance of enlarged jaw muscles in some patients

Research suggests that botulinum toxin may help some patients with bruxism and muscle-related TMD symptoms, although results vary and additional high-quality research is still needed.

What Can I Expect?

Treatment is performed during a brief office visit using a very small needle. Most patients describe the injections as quick and easily tolerated.

Improvement develops gradually rather than immediately. Many patients begin noticing less tension and discomfort during the first one to two weeks. The effects are temporary and commonly last several months, although every patient responds differently.

Your treatment plan, including the muscles treated and the amount of medication used, will be customized to your anatomy, symptoms, and muscle strength.

Is This a Cure for Grinding?

Neuromodulator treatment can reduce the force generated by overactive jaw muscles, but it may not eliminate the underlying reason you clench or grind.

For the best long-term outcome, it may be combined with other recommendations, such as:

  • A properly fitted night guard or retainer
  • Stress reduction and habit awareness techniques
  • Jaw exercises or physical therapy
  • Evaluation of sleep quality or possible sleep disorders
  • Dental, orthodontic, or restorative care
  • Changes in posture, diet, or daily habits

A night guard protects the teeth from direct contact, while a neuromodulator helps reduce the muscular force placed on the teeth and jaw. Some patients may benefit from using both.

Is It Right for Me?

You may be a candidate if you have strong or overactive jaw muscles, persistent clenching or grinding, muscle-related jaw pain, or symptoms that have not improved sufficiently with conservative care.

A clinical examination is necessary because not every type of jaw pain is caused by the chewing muscles. Joint conditions, dental problems, infections, arthritis, nerve pain, and other concerns may require different treatment.

Botulinum toxin is FDA-approved for several medical and cosmetic conditions but is not specifically FDA-approved for treating bruxism or TMD. Its use for these conditions is considered off-label, meaning that a qualified healthcare professional may recommend it based on clinical judgment and the patient's individual needs.

Possible Side Effects

Most side effects are mild and temporary. They may include:

  • Tenderness, redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection sites
  • Temporary headache
  • Temporary chewing fatigue or weakness
  • Temporary changes in the smile or facial expression
  • Uneven muscle response or facial asymmetry

Rare but serious reactions can occur with botulinum toxin products, including difficulty swallowing, speaking, or breathing, or weakness in areas away from the injection site. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience these symptoms.

Please tell us before treatment if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, breastfeeding, have a neuromuscular condition, have an infection near the planned injection area, have previously reacted to a botulinum toxin product, or take medications that affect the muscles, nerves, or blood clotting.

Give Your Jaw Muscles a Break

You do not have to accept constant jaw tension, morning soreness, or muscle-related discomfort as part of everyday life.

Schedule a personalized evaluation to learn whether therapeutic neuromodulator treatment may be appropriate for you.
